Hi There!

Long before I was a professional Long Arm Quilter I was a maker of some pretty fabulous bags.

I have a story for you today. If you are in a hurry that is fine, just scroll through the pictures. there will be more wonderful quilts soon.

I get asked all the time why I don't take orders for Camp Follower Bags anymore. Not too long ago I got chased down in the commissary by a lady carrying one of my bags that I made 9 years ago. She was shouting "Your Tia!!!" Indeed I am. Wow, that makes my heart sing. I know many of you did not know me during the days of Flickr so you may be unfamiliar with my Bags. (you can look at my Camp Follower Bags Blog if you like. It is still live, and you will see my cute kids when we lived in Australia). I made bags from the uniforms of Servicemen (and women) for the folks who loved them. I didn't buy a bunch of old dirty uniforms and make bags from those, I only made bags from the actual uniform that that particular person had sweat (and often bled) in after the clients contacted me through my website. Each bag was totally unique. I think at my height of popularity I was making 12 completely different type bags that I had designed and created a pattern for. It was very difficult to keep up with demand with just me making them, but I hung in for a long time. My designs were being knocked off right and left. It was so sad to see something I worked so hard at being snatched away. I understand why it was happening...they were pretty awesome and I couldn't possibly sew for everyone. People would email me furious at my price point. Enraged I was charging for a product that took from 8 to 16 hours to make. First I had to figure out what the client wanted, what fabric to use with their uniforms, deconstruct the uniforms and then create something totally custom, beautiful and in most cases reversible. That's a tall order but I did it for hundreds of bags. And I did it with a glad heart.

Well, not only did I make bags for service members who were alive and well, I also made the bags for the fallen soldiers' loved ones if they asked me to. I didn't charge for them because I felt it would be wrong. I was honored to do it. I did it with love.

Well The Hero bags, as I called them is what ended up making my whole business come to an exhausted halt. Towards the end I started getting requests for Hero Bags from women whose husbands weren't dead at all. Heck some of the ladies had nothing whatsoever to do with the military, they just wanted a free bag. These people clearly had no clue what is was like to get the call or visit that would send your world crashing or to see a friend break. I suppose they were going to use it as a talking piece? Frankly I have no clue why they would want one. My market was as niche as they come. It broke off a chunk of my heart when I got request after request that turned out to be false. I was just done.

I changed lanes from making awesome quilted bags to quilting awesome quilts.

I just want you all to know why I quit. I loved it so much, but it became too much for one woman and quilting is so much easier.

This is the last part of a Hero Bag order that I started on over 2 years ago. Margie is the mother of SSG Rolfing. I have never met her, but from our correspondence she must be one of the most wonderful and patient people on the planet and my soul aches for her loss. If you have the time please go read about SSG Rob Rolfing. Go read about Margie's son. Know that we all lost a fine man.

Margie wanted me to make duffel bags for her grandsons. Rob's nephews. Out of the 12 type bags I have made in the past, none of them were duffle bags. The trouser leg just wasn't wide enough, there wasn't enough fabric. I started on these bags so many times but put them away because I just didn't have enough uniform to make them happen. Finally I forced myself to do it. I ended up using every single bit of the trousers to make these bags. The inside out pockets, the fly, the reinforced knee and rump. All of it got used. Frankly when I first spoke to Margie I did not have the skill to make this bag...or to figure out how to make it happen. I am a much better maker now. This was the time for it to happen.

The bags are quilted just like all my other Camp Follower bags are, I even used variegated thread.

I used Rob's patches and one of his favorite shirts to make the sides of the duffel bags.

One of the bags turned out about an inch longer than the other and I couldn't find a zipper to fit. As a last resort I took one of the zippers from an old ACU and it fit perfectly. It was like it was meant to be. Maybe it was one of his friends? At any rate I started sobbing. Silly right? Many folks cry about zippers, but not for the reason I was.

Margie, thank you for letting me make these bags. I am so sorry it took me so long to make the time to figure them out. I hope the boys love them and wear them out after years of sleep overs, visits to you, hiking trips and just all out use.
Hey there! It has been ages since I blogged on my bag blog. I finished this set of Hero bags and felt they needed to be shared on this space.

I made this set of Hero Bags for the Mother and sister of SSG Robb Rolfing. He was killed in Iraq on 30 June 2007.

I made a Stu tote, with quite a few customizations from the blouse of Robb's ACU uniform to create this design. I tried my best to fit in all that Robb's mom wanted to have included. I lined the bag with one of his shirts.

I sourced some special magnetic closures for this set of bags that I think work really well.

The bag I made for Robb's Sister is an oversized Cather bag. I used one of the legs from Robb's ACU pants to create this design. This bag also has a heart magnetic closure.
So, I haven't made any of my Camp Follower Bags / Hero bags for quite some time. I forgot how much of an honor it is to sew with the actual uniforms of men who have answered the call of their nation and sacrificed their lives for our freedom and so that our way of life can continue without oppression. This order took me forever to make. I am ashamed to admit. I was going through my own mourning after my husband retired from the Army. I know it is NOTHING like what Robb's family is going through, but to me it was pretty big. I have been in the Army all my life and I was so sad to not be part of it anymore. After coming to terms with retirement and realizing what a dork I was being I was able to return to my bag making. I still love doing it. Margie, I pray these bags give you some comfort. I still have 2 more duffle type bags to make. I need to design the pattern first of course since I have never made a duffle bag.
I thought I could keep up with 2 blogs, but apparently that is a bridge too far for me. I now blog almost exclusively at

Hey there folks! How are you all doing? It has been ages since I blogged on this blog. I do most of my blogging on my quilt blog (tiacurtisquilts.blogspot.com) but I miss this space with so much of my life over the past years. So blogging here will again commence!

Our latest adventure is having hens in the backyard. We started with a couple Ameraucana hens and they did great. they happily lived in their little coop and grew and did very well. We made the coop larger as they grew and tried to keep it safe from predators.

The kiddos had a lovely time watching their hens. I guess we had them for about a month, and it was time to go on vacation. Our neighbor was watching our cats and had no problem watching our hens too (Stanley went to the kennel).

The Beach was wonderful! What a relaxing peaceful time! We really liked Fort Walton beach. It had its perfect moments and its stormy ones too...but it was great and I will take it any way I can get it! My husband did all sorts of fishing and the kids did all sorts of swimming. I did some painting and lots of reading!

We then drove up to the mountains and surprised my parents on their annual 4th of July reunion picnic. It was so so good to see everyone!

Happy Independence day! Well on the last 3 nights of our vacation all 4 of our cute little chicken girls got eaten by a raccoon. Sad....but coons are very sharp and no matter how our pet sitter tried to reinforce the battlements, it still got to the hens. Well, as they say life goes on! We are starting again!
But this time I couldn't find pullets so I decided to start with chicks. And quite a variety of chicks! Thanks to Alan of Heartland Hatchery This little lady (hopefully!) is a Silkie. She will look quite fuzzy when she is grown and be a small bird. This one is Sam's chick.
This girl was a Polish hen of some sort...but I noticed yesterday after I got her home that she just didn't seem as healthy as her friends, and indeed she had passed away during the night. But she was a cute little thing

I know I got too many...but with my luck some won't make it. So my neighbors won't have to worry about giant mounds of chicken poo. They are crazy cute. My daughter has been out playing Mozart for them, we read somewhere that hens like music.
And I have been quilting like a fiend. Really, so much of my time has been spent down in my studio that I have almost no time to blog or market myself. This quilt is QOV (quilt of Valor) made by lovely Raylene. I always love quilting her quilts. She has perfectly flat seams and she is a joy to be around.

OK, I have some work to go do. You all have a great day and I hope to see you here again quite often.

Do any of you have hens? How do you keep Racoons away? I do have a trap....but for now I am waiting for my husband to return home before putting it out. If he wasn't coming back this evening I would go ahead and do it myself...but he likes to do that sort of thing.
Hey there! I feel like I haven't made a Camp Follower Bag in Ages! It has been a long time. But I have been quilting lots and lots of quilts for folks. I sure love my job.

OK, lets talk about this order for a second. The request was to make a Molly purse out of both the green flight suit and the gray ACU.

I love this size zip bag. It can act as a clutch or a project bag for little hand stitching or a place to keep tech chargers while traveling....I have zillions of them around the house and I forget what is in each one so it is a little surprise when I find one under the couch...Ah ha! There is my lipstick.

Good Morning! Yesterday was my middle Man's birthday. He is 10 years old. 10 Years old is a big birthday among Army Brat kiddos. They get an ID card when they turn 10. That is a big deal. For my kids entire life they have watched Stu and I show our card to do just about anything on the military compounds that we have lived on over their lives. To get on post, to go shopping to see the doctor to get medicine...to get in special buildings...everything requires a display of an ID card. Well, Where does on keep an ID card? In a cool wallet of course! Ethan and I looked and looked for a wallet for him. I was disgusted by the "craftsmanship" and materials of the wallets we found, so I went home and made one. Actually this happened years ago. My husband carries one of my wallets, I carry one and I made one for my dad. They are the easiest things to make and are so simple and functional.

Birthday traditions are pretty simple around here. Whoever the birthday person is picks out their special meal and they get a cake. Ethan choose Steak, potatoes and grilled Bok Choy. It was pretty good. March has 2 birthdays 3 days apart, so the boys get a party together. Low key. Sam ( my youngest) has already put his order in for Sushi.
I know the pictures aren't great, but I was a fool and used top secret special fabric that I can't show until next month. You can go look at Carrie's blog (SuchitySuch) and get an idea of the fabric she gave me to make some things with for her. It is named Collage. It is pretty awesome. I will go find Sam's wallet so you can see the structure of the item. I plan to make a tutorial for a simple leather wallet, but that may not happen until tomorrow. I have too many things to do today. Not the least of which is getting ready for another birthday and a birthday party on Saturday.

Hey there! Did I mention on this blog that I have some patterns out? Well, I do! They are starting to pop up on news shelves now. My first one is in Quilt Almanac. It is a quilted Kindle case, or "Hip E-reader"

Cool huh? Well, I have 2 copies to give away. Do you want one? It is pack jammed with great projects I promise.

I just finished another pattern this morning for the Type quilt I made for quilt market out of Julia Rothmans awesome Type fabric it will be in a Fons and Porter magazine soon. Gosh it feels good to have that project away.

Modern Patchwork will have my Library Tote bag pattern.

Ok leave a comment letting me know if you would like to see any specific patterns from me in the future. I have been making bags and quilts for the past 10 years from my own designs so they will be easy to make into patterns. This pattern writing is pretty wonderful.

Leave a comment below and maybe on my other blog ( you will have 2 chances to be a winner).

Good Luck!

Good Morning! I was trying to explain this half square triangle technique to my mom yesterday on the phone and I decided that pictures would be better than words. I am pretty sure this technique has been around for ages, but I first saw it done by Jenny Doan of Missouri Star quilt company. I think.

1) Take 2 squares the same size.

2) Lay them on top of one another

3) stitch around the entire block

Hey there! How have you all been? I sure hope you have been well in my absence. I have been up to my neck in quilting and thread....but for Christmas I took a little break. It is COLD here. I hope you are warm where you are. The disgraced generals are digging the snow. Even Stanley and his gimpy hip have had a good time dashing through the icy snow.

My parents drove over from North Carolina and my sister flew in from San Francisco for the Holiday. It has been so so good spending time with them.

This is one of the very few handmade Christmas gifts I made this year. It is for my sweet nephew. An art pouch to go with his quilted notebook cover. I hope he likes to daw as much as my kids do!

My mom looks great too. I tell you there was a span of time there a couple months ago I thought I would never get to see here again. This is one strong woman. 2012 has been rough on her. A foot surgery, brain surgery and a rotator cuff repair (that will have to be redone when they return to NC in January).
I ordered some lovely new notions and a little pack of Liberty of London fabric for mom so when she is ready to return to quilting she will have the very best supplies to work with. I ordered this gift from Purl Patchwork.

But Stu and I got shotguns....we will be ready for the next family fun shoot on post. Watch out skeet here we come!
Hey there Folks! Here are my latest 2 bags. They are all finished and ready to send off. This post will be mostly pictures since they speak for themselves. Both of these tote bags are reversible like most of my bags are.
This one is made out of an old Vietnam marine top. This top had a great deal of storage wear on it even after I washed it twice. My favorite aunt on my husbands side sent it to me and it was really a pleasure to make this bag for her.
Both bags inside out. I have a little pouch to make for the colorful bag and then only one more Hero bag then I am finished with making bags for a while. But never fear I am writing patterns! Crazy story how that little gig came about! I will save it for next time. It will give me a reason to blog some more, right?the Campfollowerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16342276701416619400noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2951351611948250076.post-27201492357014229942012-12-03T13:34:00.000+11:002012-12-03T13:34:10.400+11:00Morning walk with the fellas.

When I was a little girl sometimes we would skip church and go for a walk in the woods. Nothing like admiring Gods glory in the great outdoors. Granted I was growing up in Germany where some of the most amazing forest on the planet exists. Well I gave it a go this morning with my little fellas.

Hey there! I turned 37 yesterday. I felt all year that I was already 37 so I assumed that I was turning 38, but nope. After doing a bit of math I am only 37. It is like I get this entire year to do over. Thursday was thanksgiving so for the past several days I have gotten to eat heaps of turkey. If that wasn't good enough I got to open some presents yesterday!

Well, The kids kept asking me what I wanted for my birthday and all I really want from them is their wonderful little bodies in my embrace, but I guess they want to give something tangible....so I suggested some art. I love their art. Emma painted me a still life, Ethan a couple happy paintings and Sam made an ink drawing of some sort of battle scene. I love them all.

OK...just so you know I don't LOVE being in front of the camera. My image never looks like my mental one and I hate standing still. I get anxious. Keep that in mind when you see these pictures, mom. Oh and pay attention to the table the quilt is laying over. I thought it was one of our tables from the sun room.

As you can see Emma is taller than I am. Even slumped over she is taller than me.

My husband gave me a watch (and a fancy smart phone). It is a see-through baby G. So it reminds me of my clear plastic jelly shoes I got in Italy one summer when I was 8. A cinderella watch in my fantasy world...and it looks like the boob fairy came to visit me...but I think it is just that I am filling out a bit in my maturity. I probably need to get out and exercise instead of sewing all the time. Heaven knows the disgraced Generals love to go for walks!

Well, my sweet Mother in Law gave me her cousins sewing machine and cabinet! And her mothers sewing basket. Carol has been keeping this machine a secret from me for the past 3 years...waiting for just the right time to give it to me. Imagine my surprise when I went to fold up the quilt that was laying over what I thought was one of the tables from the sun room only to discover an fabulous sewing cabinet!

See here it is all closed up. Would you ever suspect this was a sewing cabinet?

Here it is all opened up. The little chair has drawers in the side FILLED with loot. Scissors sharpened to a razor edge, spools of thread, bobbins galore and all these wonderful Pfaff sewing machine feet.

That yellow paper is the original lifetime warranty. It says to send it in if the machine ever moves out of state...do you think they will send me a new belt to replace the frayed one?

Look how pretty and shiny this Pfaff is? I have never owned a Pfaff before so this is a real treat. It has a dial to determine what sort of stitch is desired. It does all sorts of fancy stitches. Luckily it also comes with the original instruction manual and warranty. So, my husbands Aunt bought this fine machine in Waynesville, North Carolina in 1953. I have cleaned her up and named her. I also ordered a belt off ebay so I can get her back in working order in no time. I did run her with the frayed belt and she sounded so nice!

Here we are. My mother in law, all her grand kids , and my husband and I. Stu and I squabbled to have Sam stand in front of us so he could hide the fact that we are mostly still in out PJs.

Well, all I can say is that I had a great birthday and a wonderful visit with my husbands mom and her husband John. Thanks so much for driving all this way. We sure loved having you. Your Aunts sewing machine is in great hands and I love her already! The sewing box is already in position by my seat on the sofa and filled with appliqué things.

Oh, one more thing Stu and I did on my birthday....Carol and John watched the kiddos and we went out to a movie! We watched the new 007 - Skyfall. What a great bad Guy! Daniel was in fine form as well...after the movie we helped some folks jump their car off. Then Thai food....the end to a perfect week.

XO,

Hey there! Happy Thanksgiving! I didn't get any pictures of our food or of us eating...who wants to see that anyway? But we had a great meal. My husbands in-laws came in from Tennessee and it was great sharing a meal with them for sure. The kids have loved getting to visit with them. I need to remember to drag out my real camera instead of my phone camera since I don't know how to transfer pictures to my computer from my phone. I am too dumb...but maybe my phone knows how?

Anyway, I managed to get a picture with my husband after he returned from feeding the troops. I don't have many uniform pictures of my husband...I should take more of them I think.
I have been busy quilting Texas flag quilts. Here are my latest 2. I will blog more about them on my other blog.

I still love doing the quilting on these quilts. I love all the open space. I have 3 bag orders to finish up and those will be completed next week. As long as nothing too wild takes place.

So, after much back and forth we have finally decided on a name for this guy. We named him after the great general who was brought low by a woman. General David Petraeus. When we brought Stanley home from the pound his namesake (General Stanley McCrystal) was being booted out of the Army for speaking ill about the administration so it just seemed obvious to name this guy after the current general in hot water. Now, I have my own suspicions as to why he is leaving the CIA and surely they are obvious to everyone else who is not guzzling the koolaide the media crows about, but this is a craft blog not a political one.
He is fitting in quite well into our family and walks on his leash like a dream boat. And he is quite strong so he can drag my chubby behind up these hills around our house. He likes to hang out in the basement with me while I sew. Sometimes the snoring of 2 retrievers is almost as loud as my sewing machine.
He and Stanley are getting along quite well. Their favorite game is fetch or Frisbee. David is much better at fetch since he is faster and has 4 fine working legs. But don't write off Stanley because he is quick to sneak up and steal the ball. His hip is feeling much better after we have begun giving him Joint Max triple strength. **** Thank you Margie Horton! That stuff has something very effective in it for sure.
Both dogs get to be seen by the vet on Tuesday - David for his tumors (I suspect them to be Lipomas but there is a very firm one on his sternum so we shall see) and Stanley will be seen for his gimpy leg. So the dogs are Lumpy and Gimpy for now.

Hey there! How are you doing this Friday before Veterans day? I hope you are good. My kids have a 4 day weekend, so we have been crafting away in the studio. Emma is sewing away on zipper pouches and the boys are playing with Stanley and William Sherman.

I decided I would finally make myself a new wallet. I have a 14 year old wallet that my husband got me for Christmas when we were stationed in Germany. It is a soft leather one...but holes are wearing in the corners. Not good...and kinda pathetic considering I make wallets for others. I also wanted it to have room for my fancy pants phone. I can't tell you how much I hate having to dig for stuff in my purse, so I want all the essentials together.

So this is the design I came up with...

Viola! The low maintenance Technology wallet. A strip of elastic to hold it closed and keep ID cards and drivers license for getting lost. That pocket is deep enough for the entire card to be secure. I pulled the cards up for the picture.

Some fun quilting and BDU with narrow strips of Denyse Schmidt fabric.

Inside there is a pocket for the phone and another for cash, receipts, and a lip gloss.

The first on I made was all leather, but a bit too roomy. It was almost more of a clutch than a wallet. I do have a big phone (the Galaxy S3) so it does not fit well in the little technology wallets made for iPhones.

I think I am going to make a couple more of these and stick them in my shop.

***Oh thank you so much for all your wonderful suggestions for naming the new dog. I think we are going to stick with William T. Sherman. He barrels his way into situations, seems a bit crazy at times but can really pump out the love when needed (I don't know if General Sherman ever was known for his ability to "pump out love"). He does have some bad habits that we are working on...hopefully it will get easier when my husband returns home from his latest jaunt to places exotic and distant. William is quite dominant...much more so than I thought Golden retrievers were supposed to be. Whatever the other creature is that was crossed with Golden Retriever was massive and a tad overbearing.

At any rate life is good here and I hope you get a chance to sew with someone you love!

Hey there! Last week my husband and I went on a date to the pound. We met this fellow. After several visits he has come home to live with us. They say he is part lab and part golden retriever. He is enormous whatever he is. He is also about 4 years old.

So far he is a good guy. He fetches wonderfully, and sits and lays down on command instantly. It is kinda funny. He enjoys chomping ice, chasing the cat laser pointer toy, and herding Stanley. Stanley is not real crazy about that. All in all there has been alot of the above going on. and A LOT of fetch. He is a smart dog and eager to learn.

He does have a Lipoma on his side and a smaller one on his chest. He has a vet appointment so they can tell me more about them. He was at the pound for almost an entire month and seems quite happy to be here in our household.

We need a good name for him. I like to name my pets after Generals. Stanley McCrystal and Eisenhower (Ellie is not a general she is just scenery). Sherman is in the running, but he did burn down Atlanta...so he is not my favorite. McArthur had the biggest surrender of US forces in history so I am not wild about him either. Do you know any good generals? Preferably big and red headed and having a fondness for fetching.the Campfollowerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16342276701416619400noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2951351611948250076.post-89815562420957273912012-11-01T10:40:00.000+11:002012-11-01T10:40:55.628+11:00last minute halloween skeleton costume

Happy Halloween! I know this may not help you much this year, but it may be just the ticket next year. What do you do when it is last minute and your kids still don't know exactly what they want to be for halloween? Well, I will tell you what you can do. Make them skeletons. It is cheap and so easy!
All you need is white acrylic paint, a brush, a bit of water and maybe a glass of wine (this is an old vine Zin).

The game changer is this...a black sweat suit. It was $5 for the top and $5 for the bottom. Oh and a kid. Any kid will do really. But I am using my middle man.

Now all you do is paint bones on the sweat suit. I started with the sternum (chest bone) and branched out into the clavicles and ribs.
Pretty cool I think. Frankly I have always wanted to make this costume, but I have never had kids that supported my artistic whims like I did this year. I wanted Emma to be a skeleton too, but she would have nothing to do with it.
***** Just be sure to make them stand up and not touch ANYTHING until they are dry (about an hour for us). Good luck with that by the way. I have white acrylic paint all over the place.

Good morning! I finished some bags! I bet you thought I didn't do bags anymore. I sure don't do many these days when quilts are so much more easy and from a business standpoint (yep, I am a business and have to think like one sometime) every so much more profitable. Needless to say I have been doing a great deal of soul searching with my bags. I am not sure what the future holds where they are concerned. I would like to just write a book about how to make them and then let them go so I can focus on quilts. I know there is already a book about making bags from uniforms on the market...but in my opinion I have more to offer than that book. I need to pitch my book proposal. It seems all the bloggers have books out these days...oh well we will see what happens.

Shall we talk about these bags? This first one is for a dear lady I met while I lived in San Angelo. She has the best nose I have ever seen and if I am ever in the market for a nose job, I am taking a picture of her nose to the rhino guy. This bag is a Sabrina Bag. I make it using the blouse of the uniform.

I quilted this bag on a smaller scale than I normally quilt the bags...but I guess that is because I have been doing such small scale and dense quilting with my long arm machine I kinda forgot where I was . The thread is a great variegation with aqua and brown and it goes perfectly with the fabric Carrie selected.
She wanted "Prayer Warrior" quilted into the handle. I love that concept...being a prayer warrior. I have known several prayer warriors in my life and they are truly special people.
Carrie came over to my house to select her fabric. If you know me and have been to my house you know I have a bunch of fabric. It can be overwhelming. Carrie came in with her mind set on a specific color family and I think she changed her mind 15 times. We had stacks of fabric all over the place. I think I laughed more that morning about fabric than I ever have. She finally settled on an enormous stack of Nigella by Amy Butler. I worked all the fabric into this bag...some of the pieces in tiny segments.
This is the inside. This bag like most of my bags is indeed reversible. Oh and the big double interior pockets are lined with different prints as well. I have one more little thing to finish with this order and it will be off on its way.
This is a special bag that I made for a veteran who is currently wheelchair bound. He wanted a bag that was big enough for both his cellphone and his wallet. He wanted a thin strap so he could wear the bag across his chest, and he wanted the bag to be very simple to get into since he has trouble with one of his hands.
The fabric was a bit of an adventure. He wanted an accent fabric with Japanese ladies on it. In all my fabric I only had one fabric with Japanese ladies on it. It was an older piece which I purged about 3 moves ago and neglected to delete off my fabric gallery. I felt like an ass, but I had an excuse to drive down to Olatha and visit Quilters Haven. They have a great selection of Japanese fabric so I assumed they would have some Japanese ladies. And Japanese ladies were in abundance! I loved the detail on this print, and I fussy cut the ladies, so he can see one lady on the outside of the bag and 2 more are peeking out when he opens the bag.

I also really like the quilting on this bag. I think it looks like wood grain, but my husband thinks it looks like topography.

Well, folks I hope you have a happy time quilting or sewing or just doing your thing.
Hey there! How have you been? I hope you have been good. There has been much thread flying around here. I have been sewing up a storm for sure. I will say that with my husbands new job and all the traveling he is doing, I sure am able to log crazy hours at the sewing machines. Really! The kids are happy to eat breakfast for dinner and I can sew that much more.

I have been making samples for quilt market. This is a quilt.

And these are the coolest little quilted notebook covers for Moleskins (my favorite type of notebook). The morning after I finished these covers I wanted to take pictures of them...but I couldn't find them anywhere. I was afraid they had all been a dream, but I spotted them in my daughters book bag. She was on her way to keep one for herself and give the other one to her teacher. She thought they were the coolest things I have made in ages. I told her that I would make her different ones...these need to be sent out. I need to remember to follow through with my promise and actually make some for Emma. They only take a moment to whip up and I have the notebooks all over the house.

While I was working away in my sweat shop basement, my middle man trotted down the stars and made the bold announcement that he wanted to sew something! So I helped him make a pillowcase. What a great project for a kid! He was as proud as he could be. We used the pattern on Allpeoplequilt.com and he did everything.

I don't know why I have never done this before? It was so quick and so easy. I think I see many pillowcases in my future.

This is some of what my sewing room looked like yesterday morning. I am working on nailing down dimensions for a pattern. Yep I am finally taking the dive into pattern making. For both my bags and my quilts. I think some big changes are on my horizon and I can't wait!

I finished quilting this awesome quilt. It is so wonderful. I was happily taking pictures of it in my backyard yesterday evening and noticed a dull hummmmmm in the background. I finally looked up to find where the buzz was coming from and saw that this quilt and I were standing in the middle of a migrating swarm of bees. I slowly made my way back inside and watched from the safety of my sun room. When the coast was clear I went out for a couple more shots of the back of the quilt. You can see more of it over on my other Blog Tia Curtis Quilts.

We had some furniture delivered this morning. My Sun Room is almost where I want it to be. This table will be the table that the kids use for all their crafts and works. The paintings are by my Best Friend (who I miss terrible) Sharon Smith. The table and bench legs are old pipe fittings, and the staining on the table has little pops or red and aqua that I love. The prisoners over at the USDP (US Disciplinary Barracks) are going to make some book shelves for us and that will finish everything off...It will be a sunroom/study and library all in one.

We also bought another bed. Stu and I have been sleeping on the box springs and mattress until we found what we really wanted. After the last debacle of wood boring beetles and the horror that came from Mexican made beds, I just really wanted something American made...so the Amish in Ohio made this bed for us. I love the wood. It is beautiful cherry from their forrest which they grow, harvest and process on their own land and make the furniture as well. I need to go look at the bed so I can get the name of the company. We bought it at our little local furniture shop (after looking almost at every shop in Kansas and Missouri, we bought from the place right down the road.)

I will need to make a bigger quilt for this bed...I think something Amish, don't you? Oh and the room needs to have the wallpaper taken down and be repainted. I know that, but I just ran out of steam after we did all the work downstairs. It will happen...just not right now. I think we are going to go with a pale dove gray for the walls.

What else??? My mom is doing well with her recovery. She is back home after 2 weeks of Rehab. She sounds so good on the phone and I am so proud of her and her strength. And my dad is such a hero for tending to her and driving her around to all her appointments. I thought of her this morning when I fell down my basement stairs. I think I broke my floating ribs on the left side. I wailed like a baby and Stanley came flying down the stairs to crash into me and my boys came running too. Stu helped me back upstairs and got me some Motrin...vitamin M.

OK, we are off to the Louisville Cider Festival. Have an awesome weekend!

So, Hey there! I must be the worst blogger ever. Life has been happening I tell you. My Emma turned 11. That is so hard to believe. I love her, but I really love the young lady she is becoming.
We went to the Renaissance Festival last week and since it was the Highland Games weekend Emma wore my kilt. It was my mom's before me. She bought it in Scotland when she was pregnant with me. I love it that it fits Emma. It is the Hume (Home) tartan. We are Scottish and Welsh on my dads side.
These pictures are out of order...but these are the cakes I made for her Birthday. I made 24 cupcakes as well for her class...also rainbow. I got the idea for rainbow cakes from Pinterest. I adore pinterest....so many great ideas there. These cakes are in half pint jars, and they were too much cake for me to eat, but the kids plowed through theirs with no problem.
What do you think? Do you think these guys look like they want to roll over and prance around on their back legs? I don't think so...but Emma has big plans for them.
So, today we relaxed at the house. I read a book on the back porch and the kids explored the yard and back field. It was pretty much a perfect day.
Oh and I have 2 of the Camelot Quilt blocks done now. These round blocks are surprisingly soothing to make and not quite as hard as I thought they would be. I will probably redo the one on the left...or at least in my mind I would like to redo it, but I am so pressed for selfish sewing time these days that it will probably look just like this one when it goes into the final quilt.

Just in case you are curious my mom had her surgery on the 10th. Everything went wonderfully and the tumors were removed beautifully until recovery when her brain began to bleed. The bleeding caused seizures. She is being heavily dosed with medication to try to control the seizures. She will be in Rehab for a couple weeks until she is stable enough to return home. She still needs your prayers if you have the time and inclination. Thank you in advance. I wish I could be there with her or at least with my dad. My husband will be returning home for a bit towards the end of the month, so maybe I can go home then. We shall see.

OK, have a wonderful rest of your weekend and I hope you find time to make something special for someone you love.

Yours,
At what point do you have too many sewing machines? Between you and me, I do think I am there. Especially with this purchase. I bought a lovely Sphinx Treadle today. In my defense I did leave behind 2 other sewing machines...I was a bit proud while I drove away. Who would have thought that I would leave a sewing machine behind? Well, I did. Look at that lovely artwork on the body of the machine.
I wish Bernina would do this. Paint beautiful pictures on their sewing machines. I have been looking for a treadle for years. Since I was in Australia I have been on the hunt for a treadle. After a bit of research I decided that I wanted a fancy machine...either a RedEye or a Sphinx. I also wanted a pretty table. That was important too. I think this one it Tiger Maple. It will polish up really pretty.
She is even beautiful from behind. I really don't have time right now to take her apart and clean and oil her, but soon. First I need my husband to come home and help me get her inside. She will be in the foyer.

I need to order a treadle belt for her, but I have the hand crank attachment I can use in the mean time if all the power goes off and I NEED to sew.

According to my research she is a 15-97. I can't find her serial number, which is strange....but I will keep looking. I would like to know how old she is. There are some spiders that need to be removed before she comes in too. All in all she is quite lovely.

With this machine I have 11.
2 Berninas
1 Gammill
3 singer featherweights
2 Singer 301s
1 singer 99 (I think)
1 Necchi

It is a sickness! But at least they all work and are in good condition.

How many sewing machine do you have? Do you collect them like me?

I hope I am not alone in this. Maybe I should sell some? I think I know which one I would put up for sale first.

OH well, time to get back to work!
Hey there! Here is my first Stu Tote that I have finished since getting settled. The lady I made this bag for wanted to be able to use it reversible (all my bigs without zippers are indeed reversible) but she wanted no uniform fabric visible when she flipped the bag inside out. No problem. I can do that. She also wanted elastic pockets on the sides of the bags....those required some additional thought and planning and tweaking of my normal design. But I think they turned out very nice.
