Free Piecing Quilt-a-long for my Mom

Hey there!

My mom and I are going up to Michigan on a quilt retreat with Gwen Marston next month. Pretty awesome, huh? Well, the only snag in this plan is that my mom is not a free piecing, devil may care quilter like I am. Every time we get together I want to show her how to be a Liberated quilter, or how I piece and quilt but too many other things are going on so we never have the time. I gave her the book Liberated Quilting 2 (I have book 1 and book 2....well I actually have most of Gwen Marston's books.) but my mom still does not "get it". Soooooo here I am. I am going to actually SHOW my mom how I do it. You guys are more than welcome to play along too.

My plan is to take 7 fairly simple fabrics make 6 different types of blocks (6 times) and in the end I will have a quilt. Hopefully my mom will too. The blocks are going to finish at 6 inches. So...go choose your fabrics and I will show you how to make the first block. I am going to start with my favorite block....the Log Cabin. The Liberated Log Cabin.

Aren't you a lucky duck, Tia! And what a treat to spend a week with your mom doing something fun like that.

Any tips on picking out fabric for your quilt along?

You are in for a treat! I went years ago and I'd love to go again sometime. And how much fun to go with your Mom. Show us your two quilts.
I'm really enjoying your blog: the strawberry tallcake and the summer fun photos AND that awesome spider web. Oh yeah, and the bags!

Have a great time! I went a few years ago, and would go every year if I could. Gwen is such a lovely person. She'll accept your mom, just as she is.

Hi Tia, well i am waiting on my next set of instructions, this will be fun. i promise not to be too slow a learner. in the meanwhile i will try to finish a sundress i just knew i would look devine in. isn't it funny how a pattern looks so easy and you go by their measurments and it is huge. so then you must fix the mess. i had rather be quilting. mom
