Map Fabric and a dress

I have my very first fabric collection! Well, not really...My husband and I made it while he was home recovering from back surgery. I have always loved maps. They are such an "Army" thing. I am not a GPS lady at all. I like nothing better than having a real paper map in my car to get me from one location to the other. We have been collecting maps for some time. I asked my husband to select some of his favorites and we would make them into fabric and them I would make a quilt for our bed. He seemed quite happy to do his thing. So, for the time being I have map fabric of Heidelberg, Hohenfels, Ft Bragg and Ft Lewis. All places we have lived and enjoyed. I am pretty thrilled with how each print turned out and after I finish my quilt I may make the rest of the fabric into little change purses or something small.

I started with a scribble dot. It is in shades of violet and red.

Here is part of the legend on one of the Ft Bragg maps.

This is one of the drop zones on FT Bragg. My husband spent lots of time out there back when he was younger.

This is more or FT Bragg proper. It is a bit hazy, but the colors are great so I will still be able to work with it.

I love this one of Hohenfels. The teal and brown are wonderful and even the repeat looks good.

And finally FT Lewis. Such a pretty place. We went up to FT Lewis 2 weeks after we were married. I was a cadet any my husband was a new 2LT. That was a pretty fun time, not that we got to see one another very often.

At the moment This fabric is just for my personal use. We totally copied parts of government maps, so I don't want to go to the slammer for copyright infringement. But they are pretty awesome, aren't they?

Hey there mom! I finally finished the dress. I gathered the neck hole, so it doesn't fall off anymore and I figured out how to assemble it without instructions (I have lost the instructions and the pattern for that matter). My mom cut the dress out while she was out here visiting and insisted that it be cut it larger than the pattern instructed. Well...it is pretty roomy, but I may fatten up over the long hot summer that is to come, right? Mom had me all paranoid about the dress being too small so I even added side bits. Now you may recognize this fabric...It is pretty fancy stuff Nani Iro double gauze, so I am going to wear it no matter what!

Wow, these are so cool! How did you do it? That is so very cool to be able to make a quilt with a history of where you've lived.

I've been trying to figure out how to put a map of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area on fabric for my "me" quilt. So far I haven't been happy with laser jet printing I've tried. Any tips you'd share?
