I will be nesting for a bit

Guess who came yesterday, more than an entire week early? The Big Mayflower truck filled with our furniture from Texas! Woohoo!!! It is all unloaded and up in the Apartment or down in the sorta creepy basement (no real need for a lawnmower when you don't have a lawn, hey?). Oh it is so fun unpacking and seeing all the things that have been carefully stored away for 3 years. Everything has a vile mildewy smell....is this normal or should I put in a claim? I am hoping everything will air out but I am not really sure. Everything was supposed to be in temperature controlled storage in Texas, but I sincerely doubt that since all the candles that were packed away were totally melted. I can't get over how large this house is. Even with all the boxes and paper there is so much room! I may be having some sewing classes here, there sure is space.

At any rate I am thrilled that most everything made it safe and sound (from Texas) we are still awaiting the shipment from Australia that has my sewing machines and fabric. I am NOT ready for orders ladies. I will let you know when I am, no worries!

Oh and just a word of advice....if you are going to put all your furniture and possessions in storage for 3 years, don't even bother storing kid clothing and most toys.

Well off to unpack and sort more! Have a wonderful week!

I just read your bit on Mayflower. omg, put in a claim! I moved from Washington to North Carolina via Mayflower in 1999, they were 4 days late, (imagine how excited my boss was to give me 4 days off work to "meet" the moving truck), no explanation. One of the movers had just joined the "team" in SC via hitchhiking and was truly troubled having had smoked a substance or two. The truck had knocked over a power pole in my neighborhood causing a blackout with my new neighbors thrilled to welcome me. After the truck had off loaded my entire household the driver had informed me I owed Mayflower an additional $1,244.72 and wanted the payment NOW.
So, if they say your belongings are to be kept in climate controlled...hell yes, file a claim! You can't get that smell out let alone the stains left from mildew.
Welcome home little one, good luck! Elaine

LOL! on the kids clothes and toys! Many years ago my furniture and such were in storage for 3 years while we were in Germany. Didn't have the smell problem. Depending on where they were stored in Texas, they had a lot of rain! Lots of storms with the electricity off too.
I called my sister who just made a military move and is putting together her claim to ask her. She said first off call the transportation office on post. You should have a claim. Second ,do you have private insurance? She has the military insurance on her cars and such, can't remember the name of it but you have to be military connected to get it? Anyway file a claim. And I love how much room you have in your new place!

Oh my goodness, we just put our things IN to storage for 3 years. It felt so strange to pack those things away and know that I won't see them until we make our way back to the states. =) May I ask, did you go through the Army for storing your things, or do it yourself? Some of Chris' friends told us horror stories about having things broken/go missing, etc.

Thanks for the advice ladies! I surely will put in a claim....I have been doing tons of laundry and the smell is coming out of the jackets, linens and clothing I feel like keeping. I can't wash the matresses though.....

Claudia, the Army stored our stuff in Abileen (I know that is not spelled right- sorry) from FT Hood. Where is your gear stored? Other than the odor things seem to be OK, I am oiling all my wooden furniture really well so they won't feel the need to dry and split like they did when we moved from moist Germany to DRY Texas. Ahh Good times! Oh and we do have several types of insurance, so not to worry.

Ahh gotta love the military lol I'm glad to hear that you're filling a claim, but keep on it, cause when we had to do that they wanted to take their sweet time with reimbursing us, and we had a baby on the way that needed her stuff replaced. As for the beds smelling, if you're not apposed to using it, Resolve has a furniture cleaner spray that works wonders on removing smells. And smells better then Fabreeze in my opinion :) Happy Nesting :)

We stored stuff in Delaware for three years and nothing smelled. Then we stored again in Arizona for eight years, with no problem (gotta love that dry climate!!). We didn't have much in the way of textiles stored though. Perhaps a claim would cover new mattresses though and who doesn't want a nice new clean fresh bed to sleep on!?! Happy nesting.

Welcome back to the States!!!!
Isn't funny what you can't part with when it is time to put your stuff in storage. Then you get it 3 years later and you wonder what possessed you to think that was so necessary. My garage is filled to the brim with stuff for a yard sale. Sad thing is, in September we will have been back for a year. Garage still piled high with stuff. Yikes!!!!

If you ever mosey over to VA, please look us up. Would love to have you,

T.

Good luck with the unpacking/cleaning etc. It will be great to have it all sorted and back together, especially when all the stuff from Australia arrives too!
