Thank you all for your kind sympathy. The memorial service was held today and it was very nice.
I have written over and over a big long blog entry about life and death and loss, and ice has fallen from the sky to cover the skylight above my head. There is about 8 inches of frozen hard packed ice outside on the ground, and I sincerely doubt that my mom and I will be leaving the house tomorrow. Here is my thought for the evening....curl up with someone or something (lover, child, friend, pet or maybe just a really good book) you love. Draw strength from one another and be a better human tomorrow. Our lives are so brief and there is so much greatness to be done.
For myself I have my moms kitten snoring in my bed and a book my dad just finished. I hope your day tomorrow is wonderful.
Yours,
Tia

Christmas is over....have a happy new year!
On Christmas Eve my uncle passed away. So I will be heading back to NC for the funeral. I will be away a couple days and back in the studio on the 3rd. I have several Hero bags I will be working on then as well as the other bags. Please keep my aunt in your prayers as she mourns and readjusts her life.
Yours,
Tia

Sam's Quilt
Only a couple days left to Christmas! Are you ready? I am just about ready...I still have 2 things to finish (one for Emma and one for Ethan), but other than that my planned holiday sewing is all finished. We get the kids 3 presents for Christmas (Jesus got 3 so ours do too) I like one to be handmade, one big fancy from Santa and one from Stu and I. My kids have SO MUCH stuff, they just do not need more. We are grateful to be so blessed. I want the kids to focus more on the reason we are celebrating Christmas (The birth of Christ) instead of all the presents they can get. Does that make sense? Sometimes I just can't explain it well and end up sounding like a Scrooge.
So let me show you some craftiness from this week....First and foremost I finished Sam's Quilt. I have been working on this one for almost a year and a half (I think). What took so darn long? The hand quilting! Holy Cow! My hat is off to you hand quilters out there. I really wanted to do one completely hand quilted quilt in my life....this one is not it, I will have to do another someday ;o) I guess the thought of hand quilting in the white background places was too daunting for me, so I broke down and just did my swirls on it. I really am quite thrilled with how it turned out. I had to take it off Sam's bed to wrap it up. Oh and an interesting note on this quilt...it has NO military uniform at all. I was going to put a little bit in the binding, but I forgot. I think this is the only one in about 2 years without some tiny scrap of uniform in it.

The ingredients of this quilt are ;
Heather Ross (gnomes, gold fish and dancing critters), 1974 (Urban Chicks), shot cotton, some Awesome solids that Tokyo Mama bought for me in Japan, some Flea Market Fancy by Denyse Schmidt, some newsprint, and the back is by Heather Bailey. I used a thick black cotton thread to quilt it with and the batting is a Quilters Dream Cotton in Request loft ( the thinnest loft). What else is on note on this quilt....Oh, I embroidered Sam's name on it.

I am working on a give away (some pillows made with Shade Garden fabric by Michelle Engel Bencsko) I was going to do a small quilt, but I just didn't have the time or enough fabric left over from the BIG quilt I made for her.
I made my nephew a Monster Doll. I think he is as cute as a button, but my kids think he may be too scary (but I think it is because they want him to stay here). And the birdie ornaments were a smashing success at Ethan's Kindergarten Holiday party. Those little kiddos stuffed 21 birds and chattered the whole time.
Emma and I had a fantastic time at the Ballet. Overall it was a fantastic week. I hope yours was as wonderful and may your next week be even better!

Good Tuesday to you all!
Good Morning everyone.
I hope your week is going to be a good one. I think mine will be. My daughter and I have a date tonight to go to the Nutcracker this evening. The Russian ballet will be preforming. Emma has been twirling around all morning in anticipation.
So, it has been a crafty whirlwind around these parts. I finally finished R. Hawes order. I had to order some more fabric to be able to complete it, but the shop I ordered it from sent it to my old Australian address instead of my new one. It took a while to figure out what was going on.
This is a foldy wallet I made for the order. I just really fell in love all over with the Anna Griffin Evelyn fabric in it. So I decided to fiddle with a quilt design for it yesterday. I have no real person in mind to give it to, so I may pop it in my shop when I am finished with it to see if anyone wants it. Pricing for quilts is so tricky for me. I put so very much work and thought into them. Oh well we will see how it goes.
I am the class mom for my middle man's class. On Friday his class is having their holiday party and I had to come up with a little project. No problem! I can come up with projects all day! LOL but it had to be a project for the spectrum of religious practices. He has quite the variety represented in his room. SO....once again the Spool birdies come in handy! I am making up the shells to include a little hanging bit of string so those who want to hang them can. The kiddos will stuff them during the party and another mom and myself will stitch up the tails when they are finished. The bottoms of the birds are all cut from uniform scraps since the vast majority of children are from military families. I did make a couple of civilian birds. They are all going to look great. If you haven't tried this project you really should give it a go. It is so quick and before you know it you will have a flock of pretty birds.
This is the beginnings of the quilt I am working on. The green fabric is a lovely sea foam pindot from lecien....it will really make for a soothing understated quilt I think. I will probably end up keeping it, just like so many others I intended to sell. Oh well. You see...I have a new love. Well, let's call it a crush. But I need to raise a fairly substantial bit of $$ to make it mine. The Bernina 820. Yep, I said it. The difference in the 820 and 830 is about $6,000 and the 820 does not embroider, which is fine since I never use my embroidery attachment for either of my machines. I am so amazed by that long lovely neck. But since it is a very nice sewing machine it is more practical than just a long arm (which I was looking at too). You see, someday it is my dream to have a little sewing lounge for people to come a stitch, quilt and learn new things. Well, that is my dream for now. I am a dreamer and they change frequently. I came within about a short drive back to Kansas city to buy that lovely machine, the quilting frame and they were going to throw in a sewing table for free. But I just do not have the room here to set it up. So I will wait a bit....wait and save my money!
OK, so this is the last order I have finished, wrapped up and mailed out to Kentucky. I think I have most of the Christmas orders finished, but if you need one by then, let me know ASAP. Have a wonderful week folks!

Bernina outing

I am taking my back up Bernina to the REAL Bernina shop in Kansas City today. Both machines are having issues that someone trained to work with the computer bit in the machine needs to look at. I was thinking yesterday about how happy I am with my sewing machines. They do anything I ask them to with very little complaining. I run them about 50 hours a week and so far (I am knocking on my little oak desk) I have had very little problems. So if you are looking for a sewing machine this holiday season, go look at a Bernina. They offer financing. My first one I bought with one of my crappy mutual funds (it was doing terrible, so I sold it and invested in myself). The second I bought with money made from the bags I made on the first one. Not a bad deal.
Have a great Day!

Snowed in...
Hi there!
As many of you may know it has been snowing. The kiddos got 2 days off from school and we had a blast. Despite the snow the Army machine is still rolling along. As I look out my window I can see 5 different moving trucks. It is that time of year for half of the base to move away. In the back of my mind I want to go over to housing and ask them if I can have the apartment across the hall so I can have an excuse to go get a long arm. Oh I want one bad...but I don't have any room, but if I had the apartment across the hall I would! Yeah, I know I would never get that lucky. But it is a fun fantasy.
See lots of movers! The movers for the family across the hall has set up a slide so they can just shove the boxes down the VERY steep stairs instead of carrying them. I am about to vomit cause I am so freaked out about it! I have seen movers do some pretty crazy things and it has worked out fine, but this slide of theirs can go badly wrong too!
While we were snowed in we had a bunch of little girls come over to play. When little girls come over they always love pawing through the fabric scraps (who wouldn't love that?). So I had them cut out some bird ornaments using the awesome tutorial from SPOOL. These birds are sooooo quick and you can fancy them up in the blink of an eye. See, I had this plan that the little girls would cut out the birds, I would sew them and then they would stuff them, then I would give the out as little Christmas presents. Well, my child labor plan did not work out. Most of the birdies flew home with the little girls. Oh well....it did keep them all quite for a good while.
So, back to the snow. My children have never REALLY see snow. Most of what you and I take for granted had to be learned for them. "Don't eat the icicles from the dumpster or the ones from under the cars!" "Just because a puddle has ice on it, DON"T eat it!" "STOP trying to eat the Snow" "You can't keep that snowball in your bed!" "You are going to want to put on shoes before going outside!"
Well, we got dressed up in layers so we could try out the new sled. I think it took about 45 minutes to be suitably dressed. Ethan got to wear my ski gloves, Sam was in some liners and a leather Gardening set and Emma had some little boy gloves that we acquired from somewhere. Everyone had a scarf and a hat and 2 pairs of pants, socks and snow boots. So, everyone was nice and warm. We set out (with some old bread to feed the ducks that live at the little lake). I had forgotten how COLD and wet snow can be. But onward we go. We acquired 3 other little kids on our trek and about halfway there I look back at Ethan and he is laying down in the snow making snow angels, and rolling around in the fresh snow. Oh he is having a BLAST. But when I look closer I notice he is not wearing a coat. He has on his other layers, but no coat and keeps walking right out of his snow boots (the Velcro is a bit faulty) so his socks are caked with snow that he just jabs right back into the boot. Well, it is about 10 degrees, so I know we can't stay out much longer with him wet and freezing. Everyone does get to do 2 sled rides then we turnaround for home. Ethan gets a nice warm bath to thaw him out, then hot chocolate all around and we sit down to watch more snow fall.

Decking the Halls!
Merry Christmas everyone!
I hope the season is coming to you full of good cheer and warm homes surrounded by love. We did something we have not done for over 3 years! We got a real tree this morning and decorated it up with decorations I have not seen since Texas. Was Ethan's little hand ever really that tiny? I guess Emma always has an insane attention to detail, her first ornaments sure show it, and Sam was quite the dare devil by trying to hang all his favorites from the top branches. We played Christmas music and sang carols and just had a great afternoon.
Here are my little kiddos posing in front of the tree. It is a pretty tall tree but I think with our 12 foot ceilings we could have even gone taller. That silver tinsel stuff is around the banister down the front steps because I don't like how it sheds everywhere.
I am just waiting for the felines in my house to decide to explore the tree. I hope it is sturdy enough! Our sweet little fluffy black male has gone to 2 different homes this weekend and been returned to us both times due to the human male of the house not wanting him. How does the saying go? If you love something set it free, and if it loves you it will return to your embrace? Well, he is here snuggled up in a box of scraps awaiting my mom's arrival at Christmas so she can decide which kitten she wants to take live with her in the Mountains.
Yesterday I went to the Commissary after my husband got home from class. I went by myself, which is such a luxury for me. I do like wondering around grocery stores. So when I got home and brought the bags upstairs I saw that something dreadful had happened in my sewing room. Emma had given her little girlfriends a sewing lesson and had a wonderful time cutting ribbon and bits of fabric....and moving everything (all my needles, pins, thimbles, scissors, rotary cutters, stacks of my "someday" fabric groupings....) around. Oh it has been a thrill getting everything back to the way it should be (I am being sarcastic here). It is just stuff, and she happily assisted in the putting back of everything. But anyway, back to the point of that picture up there. A dear lady in NY bought one of my half leather half quilted wallets so I decided to wrap it up. I used a bunch of the scraps on my sewing table (after Emma's class) to decorate it up fancy. That is one of the awesome things that I LOVE about shopping on ETSY.com sometimes things are beautifully wrapped, and it is just such a thrill to open them. I know I do not do much in the way of wrapping my bags I send out, but I think that may change. It was so very fun to do.
Oh, I almost forgot. Good thing I put this picture in. We went to the Moon Marble Company before finding our Christmas tree. We got to see how marbles are made. Well, they really are not made this way. Only the really fancy ones are made like this. The rest are made in China along with everything else.
Here is an Amber Purse I made this week. I have not made one from an ACU before so that was a bit fun. I left some of the zipper for detail and the lady I made it for wanted a big fabric flower on the front. I do like how that flower livens up the ACU. The inside is so wonderful too. I used Gothic Rose by Amy Butler.

windy tuesday
Hi there everyone!
Busy week as usual around here. It always seems to be. Is it that way with you? Does time seem to run at a different speed for everyone this time of year? For some dumb reason I thought we had another 2 weeks of November. Imagine my surprise when I noticed that it was December today. Who knew? I guess everyone, but still it was a bit of a shocker. I better kick into high gear, people! So I have decided to dedicate my week to bags. Duh, I should have been doing that all the time, but life kept happening and I let it get out of control again. Yet again. So my goal is to have a bag a day this week finished. I finished the Stu below yesterday, so it counts for yesterday and today I am working on an awesome Amber bag.
2 of our kittens went to new homes this weekend. That is great news for me. Little Yoda (the runt) and the massive ginger kitten. We still have 2 left for free to a good home. I am sure we won't have any trouble finding them a new place to live.

OK, this picture stinks, but it is the back of my latest quilt. I love this quilt. I made it for myself for my birthday present to me. The backing is a tea dyed muslin and I LOVE how it looks and feels. I am so happy with the way the quilting turned out on this one. I wanted to make my swirls more dense and I think they look great (if I do say so myself) I had no clue how I was going to do the triangles on the boarders until I started and I don't think I could be happier with this 9 patch.
Here is the Cameron Stu set that I finished yesterday. I love red any day, but this set is so cheerful. The quote she sent along was quite lengthy and I was afraid I would not be able to get it on the straps, but no worries, It came together like a dream.
Oh here is the front of the 9 patch quilt. It is made from scraps and some of my favorite stash fabric, some of the stuff I have been hording. It is like a grown up eye spy quilt. Oh and speaking of awesome little quilts have you seen this one? Oh I am having to restrain myself from cutting into my green fabric! But only Bags this week! No quilts or anything else!
